FOUNDATION VEDIC ASTROLOGY COURSE (page 2) MESHA (Aries)
The first flare of Fire manifesting out of the dissolution of Water at the end of Pisces. Ruler: Mars VRISHABHA (Taurus)
The energy that the constellation. Taurus, imparts to any planet that falls within it, is solidity, sensuous enjoyment and fixity. Taurus is creative, yet lazy and resistive, and needs an input of external energy to succeed. Taurus is practical, hard-working and money-orientated; it likes comfort and luxury. It needs the divine impulse to find the spiritual message through the material world. Ruler: Venus
MITHUN (Gemini)
The energy that the constellation. Gemini, imparts to any planet that falls within it, is communicative and restless, ambivalent, agile and changeable and at risk of creating scatter and ungroundedness. The sign represents the mental union of higher and lower consciousness – to understand the working of worldly life. Gemini needs stimulation and independence KARKATA (Cancer)
The energy that the constellation. Cancer, imparts to any planet that falls within it, is home-loving, sensitive, pushy. The soul is introspectively immersed in the secret ocean of primordial consciousness, but tries forcefully, with determined perfectionism, to make mundane achievements side-ways-on. Can be very good with money and financial management. Being ruled by the Moon, their consciousness waxes and wanes. SIMHA (Leo)
The energy that the constellation. Leo, imparts to any planet that falls within it, is proud, virile, ego-centric, idealistic, dominating and generous. Their leadership is magnetic (if it isn’t too much so that it’s repellant) and they are surprisingly unwilling to change. Meanness is below them (well, that’s the theory). Ruler: Sun KANYA (Virgo)
The energy that the constellation, Virgo, imparts to any planet that falls within it is precise, critical and focussed on good management of resources – to the point where he can not enjoy anything. In fact, Virgo is so concerned about principles of good management of the material world: the material veils that obscure clear sight of God, and use of discrimination to fine-tune management of the mundane, that it can lose contact with the divine and be left un-nurtured and bereft. Ruler: Mercury TULA (Libra)
The energy that the constellation. Libra, imparts to any planet that falls within it, is accommodating to the other, harmony-loving. Librans can be very indecisive and their lives can be a constant war to balance extremes, where the effort at diplomacy creates self-loss and fatigue. They are detached and impersonal. As Libra is a Cardinal sign, Librans need action and can take the lead, though their efforts to take into account the others may well drain them. They are concerned with purity and they try to relate their dealings on the material plane to an evolving sense of the divine consciousness. Ruler: Venus VRISHCHIKA (Scorpio)
The energy that the constellation. Scorpio, imparts to any planet that falls within it, is about the courageous and strong use of power to contain the painful secretive churning of hidden knowledge in the search for Amrita (nectar). They are dangerous and potentially destructive until and if they achieve spiritual maturity and compassion. The control can lead to stagnation and can be death to those around. Material issues are dealt with finesse and pride, but this must not be for its own sake. It must not rest there, or that is to be caught in illusion. It must be out of ethical regard for learning the way in which the world is the gateway to divine knowledge – through its death (in one sense). Ruler: Mars DHANUS (Sagittarius)
The energy that the constellation. Sagittarius, imparts to any planet that falls within it, is expansionist and can be dogmatic. The archer aims for far-distant knowledge, philosophy and spiritual knowledge, and usually has a sense of duty, but soars above feelings. Sagittarius is impatient and goal-orientated. MAKARA (Capricorn)
The energy that the constellation. Capricorn, imparts to any planet that falls within it, is serious, hard-working, slow to develop and depressive and timid. Humanity consciously makes the right judgments and builds accordingly, with due regard to tradition and universal Right. Capricorn is immensely patient in deliberate responsible achievement of goals and will take on any size of problem. Capricorn lives in the material world, but is climbing up out of it towards the eternal. Austerity is welcomed as problems from the past are encompassed and restrictions are used to gain strength. Mars is exalted in Capricorn: this is because this sign poses such a challenge for him to pit himself against and gain strength and solidity within. Planets in Capricorn become slow in their energy.
KUMBHA (Aquarius)
The energy that the constellation. Aquarius, imparts to any planet that falls within it, is detached, inventive, full of ideas. The glyph, the water-bearer represents the pouring-out of universal knowledge for the many: the pot of nectar, the simile for time: the way water quenches the parched and arid land in the grip of restrictive structures. It brings fruit to responsibility: harvest. Saturn, who rules Aquarius, thus makes us open to the universal – the beneficial power of Saturn, more kindly here than in Capricorn.
MINHA (Pisces)
The energy that the constellation. Pisces, imparts to any planet that falls within it, is idealistic, sensitive, inclined to fantasy, self-pitying, intuitive and idealistic. The fish are submerged in the cosmic ocean. Pisceans can merge with the divine vision, or, negatively, Pisceans can merge with anything and anyone. Freedom from bonds is different from escapism. It is a sign of sacrifice and being the victim. Pisces represent the goal of spiritual aspirants and, as 10th house from Gemini which represents sexual union: the pinnacle of that coupling: bliss as gateway to divine experience. Ruler: Jupiter We learn in the Foundation Course, that this twelve-Sign Solar Zodiac is paralleled by an ancient ‘Lunar Zodiac’ in Hindu astrology (lost in ancient times in western astrology). This system of Lunar Mansions, called ‘Nakshatras’, adds a most valued extra dimension to understanding the energies of each planet as it is experienced in your chart. These are studied in Module 3 of the Foundation Course, below.
Module 2 Here is a list of the technical steps covered in Module 2: Conceptual background to the Vedic Natal chart, and related to each of the planets:
2b. The relationship between egoic psychology and the God Realm in Hinduism. 2c. The three Gunas (This is the same as module B5 of the tantric Hinduism Course). 2d. The three Doshas (vata, pitta and kapha). 2e. The Sidereal signs and houses and their correlation to the human body. 2f. Benefic and Malefic Planets 2g. Positive/negative, masculine/feminine signs 2h. Dispositorship 2i. Mutual Reception 2j. The Vedic planetary sidereal sign rulership system 2k. The Vedic planetary sidereal sign modalities system 2l. The five Elements and the Vedic planets 2m. Exaltation and Fall of Planets, special conditions such as Sandhi and Gandanta. 2n. Mulatrikona 2o. Permanent friendship and enmity of planets 2p. Temporary friendship and enmity of planets 2q. Rajayogas Module 3. The Nakshatras
We study the Lunar Zodiac: the 27 Nakshatras or Lunar Mansions, and we learn the extra dimension of meaning they give in respect of each planet placed within them Module 4. BHAVAS or HOUSES THE TWELVE HOUSES IN HINDU ASTROLOGY How a planet will perform in you chart also depends on the House it is in and how it ‘gets on’ with the ruler of that house. Each of the Houses indicates a different area of the environment where the energies of occupant planets will be primarily directed. In the Foundation Course, we learn that the houses vary in quality and strength; the main factors are as follows: whether they are Angular (Kendra Houses: Houses of action), succedent (Houses of Security or creation) or Cadent (Houses of quest, learning and adaption):
(These House diagrams are for a Virgo Ascendant, as in the case In module 4 you learn the characteristics of each of these types of Houses, and the vastly important ways in which they affect the planet which rules them and any planet that is placed within them. Examples: Trikona: The Priestess has Rahu in the 1st, no planets in the 5th and Mars in the 9th House. Aims of Life: It is also important to be aware of the task set by each house: - its goal. This goal is established with reference to the four Aims of Life in Hindu culture: Dharma (the right path, what you were born to do), Artha (possessions), Kama (desires) and Moksha (salvation). Without these your life is meaningless and degraded. The balance of the four represents the well-rounded life, but you karma impels you to focus more on some aims than others. The ultimate purpose of these four aims is achieving the only thing that has reality: the Divine.
(These House diagrams are for a Virgo Ascendant, as in the case The Three Gunas: Additionally, you must evaluate the activities of each house and the energies of the planetary influences, your states of consciousness and actions, and the energy-constellation that is each planet. To an extent, these phenomena can be classified according to the qualities of the gunas. They are:
A spiritual system is at work: the Rashis and Nakshatras are sattvic. They modify the planets that are set within them. These nine planets are rajasic, and they act upon the twelve Houses (Bhavas) which are tamasic events-realm phenomena. Hindu astrology puts all phenomena within the context that the psycho-mental realm is essentially unreal: it is the dream of Maya, but that although it is unreal, how we relate to Maha Maya is crucially important, because the relationship we have with Maha Maya governs the extent to which we will contact the only reality, which is God. Basically the Hindu view is that we reincarnate into the world carrying a store of karma from previous lives, and how we handle this karma will govern the extent to which we come to see who we really are: one with god. We are born blinded and shackled as to our real identity. It is through good works, devotion and the grace of God in his own time, that our blindfolds are loosened and our fetters ‘ripen’ and fall away from us, and then we see what was true all along: that our individual atman is one with God, and that the Self which we cherished, our egoic self or ego is Ahankara: as constellation of our ascendant, a false feeling of separateness from others and from God, a manifestation of those Sanskaras which are destined to manifest in this life. Each house has Karakas or indicators. How you will fare in respect of the ‘matters’ of each house can be determined by assessing the strengths, weaknesses and qualities of the Karaka, which are as follows. So for the 7th House, Venus is the Karaka or indicator for the spouse, and so on:
(The above Chart is for a Virgo Ascendant: the chart of the Priestess, above) The Foundation Course also teaches you how to assess the House placement of each planet. You look at the planet occupying a house; the sign occupying that house, and the House occupied by the Ruler of that sign. Here is a brief summary of the affairs and qualities of the 12 Houses:
(The above Chart is for a Virgo Ascendant: the chart of the Priestess, above) Using the ‘proforma’ I have designed, the Foundation Course teaches you to easily assess the qualities of each of the houses in your chart and how each planet’s energies are modified by the House it falls within. The Twelve Houses, are as follows: 4a. The different bases of the different House systems in Vedic astrology 4b. House significations (environmental correlation), qualities, goals and elements 4c. The Kendra (angular), Panapara (succedent) and apoklima (cadent) houses system 4d. Trikona (trinal) houses 4e. Increasing (upachaya) and decreasing (apachaya) houses 4f. Difficult (dusthana) Houses 4g. Planetary significators 4h. The Vedic House Lords system (rulers) 4i. The Jaimini system: the atmakaraka, etcetera: how each planet is an indicator for some aspect of your life? For example, it can be so illuminating for you to know that the indicator for your mother is Mars! 4j. 1st House - Lagna or Ascendant 4k. 2nd House (maraka house) 4l. 3rd House 4m. 4th House 4n. 5th House 4o. 6th House 4p. 7th House 4q. 8th House 4r. 9th House 4s. 10th House 4t. 11th House 4u. 12th House 4v. the power of different sidereal signs as ascendants 4w. planetary indicators for:
MODULE 5. DRISHTIS (Aspects): The Foundation Course teaches you to apply the principle aspects used in Hindu astrology within your chart. These are as follows:
Taking the Priestess’ chart, here is an example: Sun, Mercury and Venus are all conjunct in the 6th House. This conjunction is strongest between Sun and Mercury (as Sun is at 6 Aquarius and Mercury is at 10 Aquarius; the conjunction with Venus is weaker because Venus is at 10 Aquarius.
The list of topics studied in Module 5 is as follows: 5a. Major and minor aspectation MODULE 6. PLANETARY YOGAS 7a. Positional strength MODULE 8. THE NAVAMSHA Chart You write basic Vedic Natal Chart Interpretations for the three focus charts and compare them to western astrology-style natal chart interpretations. MODULE 10. VEDIC PREDICTIVE ASTROLOGY a. Dasas and bhuktis - and use these for prediction for the three focus charts. Compare with the indications given by Western predictive astrology. MODULE 11. REMEDIES 11a. Gems
Aims The aim of the Vedic Astrology Course is to provide an expert knowledge of eastern and western astrological and spiritual traditions, in a way that permits critical empowering visionary fusion and contact with the planets as Gods and dialogue with other spiritual paths. These courses can valuably be combined with the western astrology courses, and with the tantric spirituality courses with their wealth of additional spiritual techniques. Focus The sole astrological chart focus of the Vedic Astrology Course is the natal charts of the same three people whom we studied in the earlier levels:
In the Vedic Astrology Course, you achieve astrological expertise and, through this, ritual, devotional, visionary and meditative contact with the divine by using:
Sani The Foundation Course is unrivalled for simply communicating to you the nature and basic quality of each planet, a special method for calculating its strength or weakness and area of operation in your life, as well as introducing you to the divine energies refracted by the planets who are prayed to as gods.
Ketu The Tantric Hindu Astrology Course allows you to build upon the secure technical assessment offered by the Foundation Course, so as to powerfully contact each of the planets as Gods (for example by relating your growing divine awareness to the Dasas and Bhuktis: the Hindu astrological predictive periods), ritually, meditationally and by use of remedies. In a general sense, it is always possible to contact each of the planets as Gods, but once you have done the Foundation Course, you will have a very exact idea of how the forces of, say, Mars operate in your life, how strong or weak your Sun is and so on. It is not possible to fully understand the spiritual and material forces of the planets unless you are able to analyse their exact position in your chart.
